Current Event- Volcano Eruption

Natural Disasters scar out earth and us forever. Although natural disasters are hazardous sometimes they are extremely bizarre and a once in a life time occasion. One of these once in a life time occasions happened recently in the Hawaiian Big Islands. Hawaii is home to some of the most active volcanoes including Kilauea volcano. The Kilauea is a highly active volcano and has been erupting consistently for the past 30 or more years. The recent eruption was to large that for the first time in the history of Kilauea's eruptions the lava flow reach the ocean, a SEVEN MILE JOURNEY! Amazingly enough the eruption happened on October 29 and only on November 25th did the lava make its first drip into the ocean.

This Natural disaster didn't cause much damage to any humans or they're belonging. It was simply just a beautiful spectacle luring tourist in like flies and sugar. The Hawaiian officials although very proud of their tourists they did want to make sure they kept a distance. For if a large ball of lava hit the water sprays could come flying. But like anyone you want to get as close to the action as possible.

Here is a video of the spectacle:

Gack- The Making's

Materials:
Boron
Stick
Spoon
Water
Baking Soda

Procedure:
Put some glue in a cup. Add water to it, about the same amount of glue. Stir. When slightly combined and a bit of baking soda. Apprimetly a teaspoon. When totally combined add 3 drops of Boron.

Outcome:
If you followed the procedure above you will get a sticky goo. That can stick to walls. faces etc.

My Experience:
After following all the steps above came out with a really nice slightly stringy Goo, Gack.

What it will feel like if done wrong:
If you come out with a not so gooy gack that feel like with gelled powder. You added to much baking soda. This is the only thing that could really mess up your experiment. But then there are minor things like to much water or too little water. Or too little boron. But all three are fixable.

Heat Resistant Make-up

As many of us know people are out their risking their lives for us. Enduring guns, bombs etc.

To better hide and protect them selves soldiers use camouflage. They use camouflage clothes, helmets, and face paint. Recently the army along with chemists have created a special face paint. A more make-up rather than face paint. They created a heat resistant camouflage make up. Like I said there are bombs. Each bomb blast send pressure waves but along with those waves it also send sizzling 600 degree celcius heat wave. Enough to burn up the first layer of any soldier. Enless they are wearing heat resistant camouflage Make-up.

Some major characteristics that this make-up had to qualify: "It had to be easy to apply and remove; waterproof; not irritate the eyes, nose or mouth; and resist rubbing off easily. And like today’s makeup, it had to come in light brown (“sand”), dark brown (“soil”), green (“jungle”), white (“snow”) and black colors. Finally, it had to include as much as 35 percent DEET. That’s an insect repellent, but one that happens to be highly flammable."

Like one can only imagine this life saving make up is extremely hard to make and took lots of time in the lab.
The chemist behind this invention is Robert Lochead. He and his team made this incredible make up by replacing all the burning ingredients such as fatty oils or hydrocarbs and replaced them with silicones. The team of chemists then used their chemical techniques to make all the particles of the "pigment" to clump. This would endure more heat. As for the color, they just used the individual pigment mixed with whatever chemical. And lastly they mixed in the 35 % gel like DEET.

Chemists save lives! Did you know that?

Polar Or Non-Polar Activity

In this test we used water and ink from pens. This picture in flipped upside down on accident but with way you can still see what happened. The orange ink was the ink that was closest to the water. And the highlighter was drawn at the top of the slip. The orange is the most polar because it rose the highest. It interacted with the water the most out of the three.

This Is a highlight ink dipped in the water. This slip examples exactly what I've noticed in the other slips. The highlighter is polar with has a less of a pull/charge with the water than most of the inks. Put interestingly enough most of the other highlighters do interact well(shown in the test/picture below). But yellow doesn't. i do not recall this one being a different brand, which could be the cause.

After a while we started to test how the inks would interact with alcohol.

This is a comparison of a test with water and a test with alcohol. The one on the left is the slip dipped in alcohol and the one on the right is the slip dipped in water. As you can see the interaction of inks with alcohol is still polar but with a much less amount of a charge/tug. That is my hypothesis. That the inks aren't interacting with the alcohol as they do with the water is because the charge is significant. Still polar but...less polarish.

Blue- Most Polar
Yellow-Second most Polar
Green-Least Polar

Cannable Air

Air pollution is a very big problem that has been plague millions of countries such as China, India, U.S, Mongolia and many more. Air pollution is caused by many different factors. Car exhausts are a prime factor. Mongolia is severely polluted because of its coal burning power plants. Electricity also creates an enormous amount. And the worst of the worst, factories. Plastic bottle factories are the probably the most dangerous.

Annually, around 1.3 million deaths worldwide are due to Air Pollution. Maybe even more. That is a enormous amount of deaths because of us. Our faults and needs are causing people to die. Its time to take a act.

This is exactly what Chen Guangbiao, a chinese philanthropist and business man did. He created cannable air. What happens is that the air is taken from high altitude mountains and canned. The cans are designed to automatically close shut the compressed air. Scientifically what happens is that "each can contains a chip so that during the packaging process when the negative oxygen ions reach a certain concentration level and the can is full, it seals automatically." This is just one act of his that has inspired people to act up. He has done many pulic stunts. He is known for his extremes. He recently smashed battery powered scooters with a sledge hammer. The cans are for 'drinking' but really the point behind them is to acknowledge people about a major problem.

We should all take act like he is. Or you never know we will be 'drinking' canned air daily.

Magnetic Boy!

Ivan Stoiljkovic was born a special a child. Walking by 8 months, Rollerblading by 15 months and able to drive a motorcycle by 2 years and now he and his grandparents have discovered that he is magnetic. He is what you a could call a super hero with outrageous powers. Ivan and his grandparents were joking around with him when they discovered that his torso is magnetic. Coins, pans his keys and anything metal stick to him. Whats even more amazing that the heavier the object is the better it sticks. You would think that the heavier it is the more likely it is to fall.

Another thing supporting this superhero idea is that he is healer hands. His family have noticed that his wounds have all healed faster than they have ever seen and they leave no scars. Also when he touches anyones wound it sends the pain to a soothing pause. Sounds crazy but they do have evidence. He has seen it happen, he alleviated his grandfathers stomach pains and took away the pain in the neighbors hurt leg from a tractor accident.

Heres a video of Magnetic boy in the act!
