"The Amazing Tale Behind Winters Bionic Tail" By Kavi Dolasia on 10/03/2011

Most things that you de in the movies are fiction. But one specific movie called "Dolphin Tale" has come to life. This movie is about a dolphin that got caught in a crap trap and lost its tail.  The people in this movie  the people of the town didn't believe that the dolphin could live without a tail.

This story has actually happened in real life. One cold morning in December, 2005 a daily rutine for fisher man Jim Savage set out on his boat in Forida to Mosquito Lagoon. The fisher man soon saw a bouy moving awkwardly so curious Jim went over to see. As he got close he started to hear strange whining sounds and that when he saw it, A baby dolphin caught in the crab trap struggling to get out. Jim's natural instinct told him to grab out his knife and immediately start cutting. One the dolphin was free he noticed that the dolphin couldn't swim far. Sadly the ropes on the crab traps were so tight they cut circulation to his tail enabling it to move.

Realizing the dolphin was in distress he called the Hubb-Sea World Research Institute to help get the 3- month old dolphin to shore. Then put her on a ambulance for a 5 hour journey to her new home in The Clearwater Marine Aquarium.  Since this cute little dolphin was found in the freezing water in winter they decided to name  her "Winter".

The aquarium was devastated when they saw that her tale wasn't getting any better. The only way that they could save her was by amputating her tale leaving her only with a stump. Even after the amputation she din't seem to be getting better.  Wniter is a real trooper so she would try and swim instead of laying on the provided mats. She would "swim" by moving from side to side but the experts at the aquarium feared she would damage her spine.

Then a miracle happened, the aquarium received a call from Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics Inc. who offered to manufacture a prosthetic tail for winter. The tail would slip onto her body and cover the stump working as a tail.

The white thing is the prosthetic tail!!

I also highly recommend you to watch "Dolphins tail" It is a very interesting and adventurous movie. Down below is the trailer.

  1. I can't wait to see this movie. I am sure it will inspire many people who have to wear prosthetics, especially children.
